County Stadium, Milwaukee

County Stadium in the 1950's

County Stadium was built in hopes of luring a baseball team to Milwaukee. On April 14th, 1953 the new Milwaukee Braves opened the stadium with a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The game was won in the 10th inning with a home run by Billy Bruton. It was love at first sight for the fans. Right from the very beginning, Milwaukee came out in huge numbers to support their Braves. As the years passed, the numbers dwindled but the first few years were absolutely amazing and set attendance records for the league.

A couple of interesting footnotes to show how big these early numbers were:

  • The Braves surpassed 2,000,000 4 times in 13 years at County Stadium.
  • County Stadium hosted the Milwaukee Brewers from 1970-1997. During that
time, attendance only surpassed 2,000,000 once (2,397,131 in 1983).
  • Miller Park has surpassed 2,000,000 four times to date (2001,2004,2005,2006)
